April 3, 2012 :
Thaworn Wiratchant, the brilliant Thai golfer with 15 regional titles to his
credit, has confirmed he will compete in next month’s inaugural Luang Prabang
Laos Open.
The
Luang Prabang Laos Open will be played at Luang Prabang Golf Club from May 3 to
6 and is the opening event of the season on the ASEAN PGA Tour.
It
boasts prize money of US$80,000 and is one of eight events on the 2012 Tour.
Thaworn has made a career out of breaking records and he could reach another
milestone in Laos by becoming the first winner of the region’s newest national
Open. The 45 year old will be joined in Laos but a stellar field including countrymen Wisut Artjanawat and Namchok Tantipokhakul.
An extra buzz of excitement will be added as Dariya Saidara, the country’s only touring professional, will also be bidding for honours.
Thaworn
is no stranger to success on the ASEAN PGA Tour having won the Heritage Melaka
Classic in 2009. The veteran is one of Asia’s most successful golfers which he
showed by winning last year’s Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta for his
first victory on OneAsia.
He
has have claimed 12 titles on the Asian Tour and also won on the China
Tour in 2009.
It
was in 2005 that the Thai enjoyed his best year to date when he won four times,
the most wins by a player in a single season, en route to winning the Asian
Tour Order of Merit.
Many
of his country’s new generation of golfers will try and upstage Thaworn in Laos
including Wisut and Namchock.
Wisut
won last year’s ASEAN PGA Tour Order of Merit while Namchok claimed the crown
in 2009.
Great
things are expected of the two golfers who both have time on their side.
Wisut,
aged 30, marched to victory in the Sabah Masters last year to become the first
player to win four times on the ASEAN PGA Tour and also the first to claim
back-to-back titles.
The
win followed on from his success in the Palembang Musi Championship in Indonesia.
He
finished the year ranked number one with winnings of US$24,001.
He
was also voted the Players’ Player of the Year, which is an award he also
received in 2008 when he also claimed two titles.
Namchok
is another one of Thailand’s rising stars who many expect to break through at
the top level very soon.
The
24 year old has come narrowly close to recording big victories after finishing
joint second in the 2010 Thailand Open on OneAsia and losing in play-off at the
Black Mountain Masters the same year on the Asian Tour.
Namchok,
whose name means “Lucky” in Thai, first showed signs of his potential in 2009
when he won twice on the ASEAN PGA Tour and claimed the money list title with
earnings of US$27,540.
